Mama Boost

In my previous state of Weasel I am surprised I was able to turn today into a good thing but folks I think I have. I guess I just realized that I need to shake this funk as I have things to do. I needed to have my head on for this meeting today. I was not expecting so many yes, yes, yes's. They were more open to talking about how the ADHD is affecting her learning. Last time without an official medical diagnosis they just danced around the topic. I suspect most parents do not want to hear this type of stuff and will turn it back on the school. I, on the other hand, could tell it was much deeper than a crappy teacher. That may be the reason for delay in notifying me but it wasn't the whole reason for her being behind.
Today, I met with a group of teachers and counselors about Olivia's future need for additional assistance. Last year they declined the need for help until we could address the attention issues.
This year they had some good things and some bad things to share. They agree that last year was almost a total loss. Unfortunately due to her ADHD she did not retain much. This pisses me off sort of but that is water under the bridge and the best thing to do now is move forward-No, plow forward. We still have a lot of work to do but I will do what ever she needs.
They were happy to see how much we did do over the Summer with Doctor's appointments and the tutor.
5 out of 6 of these people in today's meeting were also in the Spring meeting so they were able to compare then to now. 1st and foremost for me was how happy she seems this year and how last year she used to walk into school hanging her head. It must have sucked to feel defeated everyday and swimming without any help. I won't let that happen again.
Now they say she is behind but she is motivated and does her best to complete her work. Great! I'll take it. I have always told her I do not care about the grades as long as she is trying her best.
They also say they are positive that she can catch up to be reading and spelling at her actual grade level.
Tonight during my Goodnight phone call she told me she did her homework on the bus because it was easy. I never heard that last year.
As a Mama who wants to make sure she does all she can for her kids it was nice to hear Good Job from the school.
Step one of many more to come.
Now on to my next school meeting about another daughter who isn't listening to grown-ups, isn't doing her jobs and putting her hands on other kids.
**sigh**

Oh! I just started in with our formal diagnosis and will be requesting a meeting with the school soon for my soon to be 8 year old. I feel your pain! I had just started a new post called, "ADHD. Over diagnosed or underestimated". I need to finish it!
